On the 12th and 13th April this year, Cloud Expo Europe landed at the ExCel centre, London. This huge event sets the scene for all areas cloud, including security, storage, Internet of Things and big data. The sheer expanse of the event was breath-taking, as was the diversity of tools, technologies and companies in attendance – all in all an enjoyable two days!
Dell Panel Discussion
Zizo was proud to be invited to be part of a panel discussion, hosted by Dell, on the subject of ‘Are AWS and Azure UK datacentres the death toll for UK MSPs?’. The panel was chaired by Paul Brook from Dell, with Peter Ruffley, our Chairman and Chief Product Evangelist, Martin Saunders, Technical Director of Claranet & Ollie Beaton, CTO of Secura Hosting.
Playing to a packed theatre, the panel discussion quickly heated up. It’s clear that AWS & Azure are having both a positive and negative impact on the world of managed service providers, but as in the case of all things, it really is a case of adapt or die. From Zizo’s perspective, we feel that there are mid-market clients that could well push their analytics out these new, public clouds, but large enterprise customers won’t be following quite so quickly!
Claranet – ‘Innovation in European IT’
Another highly interesting talk was given by Charles Nasser, CEO of Claranet. Issuing their latest briefing on innovation in European IT – some startling results come to the fore. The UK still lags way behind on cloud adoption, whereas France is leading from the front. (note: at the Intel cloud summit also in April, it was mentioned that Europe in fact lags behind everyone else in cloud adoption – full stop.)
The scariest finding of all – UK IT Departments only spend 8% of their time innovating. Isn’t that a terrifying stat?

It was great to see Rajinder Sharma and his team at MK:Smart with a booth at the smart cities area. It’s great to see Milton Keynes once again demonstrating thought leadership in an area that really is going to take over.
The Internet of Things (IoT) was also everywhere this year, and will be a big play for many people looking to monetise their data. How will you do it? Keep reading our blog for some more ideas on what you could be doing to get ready for the IoT explosion…..
